The complex environmental challenges facing the
war torn Iraq have emphasized the dire need for
a pool of trained and dedicated professionals
who can contribute to the development of
policies, measures and programmes for
environmental management and an educated public
who have the knowledge and skills to participate
in solving these problems.
Environmental
education is also relevant because it helps to
ensure the health and welfare of Iraqis by
protecting human health; advancing quality
education; expanding employment opportunities;
promoting sustainable development; best
practices and practical uses of technology;
applying the latest scientific data, information
and practices to Iraqi issues and places; and
protecting the country’s natural heritage.
Among the major environmental issues are water
resources and water quality, air quality,
biodiversity, chemical pollution and radiation.
In our continuous efforts to be active
participants in the rebuilding of Iraq, we
